Furry Friends   Project

One of the most difficult things for a domestic violence survivor and children is the transition after successfully leaving his/her abuser. There is loneliness, anxiety, fear of the unknown, judgmental friends and family.

Wouldn't it be great to have a best friend who was always there for you? A friend who was a companion, comforted you, calmed your anxiety and fear, loved you and never, ever judged you?

Well, there is.

Stop Domestic Violence's Furry Friends Project works in partnership with Humane Societies, Animal and Rescue Shelters, to pair up homeless pets with domestic violence survivors and families.

Through generous donations we assist survivors with adoption fees, pet food, supplies and medicine so that, while they are working towards financial freedom, they have a companion and the pet has a home.

If you are a survivor who needs a furry friend, contact us for more details and to get started.

While it may be difficult to believe, one of the main reasons victims give for not having left the abuser to find a safe place for themselves and their children is that they felt they could not leave the family pets. They felt the pet was either in danger of being harmed or killed or abandoned and yet they could not take the pets or care for them, so they stay in a high-risk abusive situation.  There is a highly emotional attachment to their pets.

The Furry Friend Project assists the victim in safely removing the pet and providing the care needed.  The Project will provide temporary boarding (most safe shelters will not accept pets), transportation to a safe location, supplies, food, and medical care.  We keep the “furry families” together. Among other things, this is a great emotional support for children who, usually, must leave all their things, friends, and home to escape. Now, they don’t have to leave their best furry friends.
